Meaningfully Using Instagram in your Business

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Cinthia of Digimorphs for her Digitally Overwhelmed Podcast. We chatted up a storm about one of the things I’m most passionate about in my business: Instagram.

Cinthia is a SEO Strategist, Google Analytics Expert, and educator for content creators and creative directors. And her refreshing approach is totally summed up in her podcast content: the digital world isn’t meant to cause so much overwhelm! And I totally believe the same is true of Instagram.

In this interview we talk about:

  • how I approach the app as a business owner using it for marketing

  • which metrics really matter (I promise your follower count is NOT one of them)

  • how powerful the tool is for connection and the people you have access to for free

  • the “social vs. search” effect and turning followers into leads and customers

  • how to leave meaningful and memorable comments

  • a challenge for Cinthia (that you can do to!!)

  • how to train your audience to get used to responding to your content which will build your engagement rate

  • the evolution of Instagram and why change is good for your business

  • why “the algorithm” isn’t something to fear or try to beat

  • how consistent visuals = brand recognition and the power of having a moodboard to use as a tool on Instagram

You can visit iTunes and listen to the podcast episode there, or feel free to just hit play below to listen to it here on my blog too.

One thing I want you to take away from this: having fun can actually be very productive! Marketing your business shouldn’t be an afterthought or approach without intention, but don’t forget to have fun too.

Now, if you listened to this episode and aren’t quite sure where to go from here I have 2 things to help.

My Instagram Golden Rule

Spend more time engaging with others and having real conversations than you do creating, posting and sharing your own content.

This simple mindset shift can make a big impact in the fruit you see coming from the time you spend on Instagram. If you only have 10 minutes today to be on the app, spend it talking to others…don’t waste it crafting the ‘perfect’ caption. You can go a day without a new post. Promise!

Visual Consistency

If this is something you really struggle with, I’ve got great news! I now offer moodboard design for your business. You’ll share details about your business, your big dreams, and the target audience you’re trying to attract and I’ll take that information and turn it into a powerful visual tool that captures the essence of your brand.

Many thanks to Cinthia for having me on her Digitally Overwhelmed Podcast. It was so fun to chat about Instagram, something I’m super passionate about.

What was your biggest takeaway from the episode? I’d love to hear what you thought in the comments below.
